How can I do a stereo like this one ?
If you are a little bit lucky, you take a plane by a clear day and you have your camera. Frame the subject, shoot, don't move, wait 3 seconds and shoot again. It's done, you have take a very large base hyper-stereo.
Why? Because the plane speed is about 900 Km/h or 250 m/s. Waiting 3 seconds between the 2 photos is equivalent to a shift of 750m. Yes, when you watch this image your eyes are not separated by 6 cm but by 750m.
Why such a base? This landscape is vaste, and the midpoint or the point of interest is about 100Km faraway. If you used the 1/100eme rule the stereo base must be 1 Km.
I can't believe that! On this image all is very small.
Yes, it is a well none effect in hyper-stereo, all looks like a model, but the reality is very different. The plane flies from Pisa in Italy to Lyon in France. It is now in the south east of Torrino, over Suza. The foreground is 25 Km faraway (the 1/30 rule for the foreground is respected), The Grand Saint Bernard pass is at 90Km and the Jura at 220 Km. The Bern Oberland at 150 Km.
Conclusion : to take stereophotography from a plane, it is just necessary to shoot 2 times spaced by 2 or 3 or 4 seconds, depending to the subject distance. This is nice rule, it is for small plane good also. Small plane flight slower but lower, and the viewed landscape is smaller.
